An interesting fact about the emerald cut is that it is one of the oldest diamond shapes. Its roots stretch as far back as a few thousand years! It is a modified form of the “table cut” that originated almost 600 years ago.

During the 1920’s Art Deco movement, emerald cut took centre stage amongst other diamond cuts. Which also explains why emerald cut is used to create vintage rings. Stonecutters had created this shape specifically for emerald stones, which gave it the name.

Ideally, an emerald cut diamond should be an elongated rectangular, with the ratio ranging from 1.30 to 1.60. The most popular choice is 1.50, however, you can choose what you wish for. Colour is one of the attributes that becomes more noticeable in an emerald cut due to its large table and step cuts retaining more colour than other diamond shapes, allowing the natural colour of the diamond to come through.

An emerald cut can be easily recognised by its elongated rectangular or square shape with 58 parallel facets, creating an amazing play of light. Gift the permanent sparkle of love to your loved ones by choosing an emerald cut diamond in the setting of your choice. Be it for an earring or a ring, this cut has phenomenal step cuts, which create a ‘hall of mirrors effect.

How Are Lab Diamonds Made?

Lab diamonds are an ethical alternative to naturally mined diamonds. Made in a lab utilising two processes, HPHT and CVD, both of these techniques mimic how diamonds get formed naturally in the environment.

If you’re wondering what happens in the two processes, let us take you through it. CVD involves placing a thin diamond seed in a sealed chamber, which is subsequently heated to 800 degrees Celsius and inundated with carbon-rich gases. The gas ionises and degrades into pure carbon, which then binds to the diamond seed. The process continues until a beautiful lab diamond is created.

Meanwhile, in HPHT, a diamond seed is placed in a specially built press that is heated to an extreme temperature of 1300-1600 degrees Celsius at pressures greater than 870000 pounds per square inch. Carbon atoms deposit on microscopic diamond seed crystals, causing a laboratory diamond to grow. This crystallisation process might take anything from several days to weeks.

Lab diamonds, sometimes known as synthetic diamonds, have a visual, physical, and chemical composition similar to mined diamonds. Natural diamonds emerge when carbon atoms are forced together at intense temperatures and pressures. The extraction of diamonds causes irreversible environmental damage. This diamond extraction procedure is also unethical, as the workers' working conditions are far from humane.
