Choosing wedding bands, in four moves

  1. Start from the engagement ring. Its setting, height, center-stone shape and band profile decide whether a band sits flush, leaves a gap or needs a curve. Bridal set studio
  2. Pick a band style that complements it: plain, pavé, eternity, curved or chevron. Band styles
  3. Decide how the couple’s bands relate: identical, same metal, or deliberately different. His, hers, theirs
  4. Order two to three months ahead to leave time for sizing and engraving. Timeline

Chapter 1

Wedding band styles, decoded

A wedding band is defined by three things: its shape (straight, curved or chevron), its surface (plain metal or set with diamonds) and its profile (domed, flat or knife-edge). Here’s every common combination and what it’s like to live with.

Chapter 2

Match the band to the engagement ring

The engagement ring’s setting decides how closely a band can sit. Choose the setting and see how each band style stacks with it, from the side people will actually see.

Most stacks place the wedding band below the engagement ring, closest to the heart. A second band on the other side frames the engagement ring, a popular way to add sparkle for an anniversary.

Chapter 3

His, hers, theirs: how a couple’s bands relate

There’s no rule that wedding bands must match. Most couples choose one of three approaches.

A slim domed yellow gold bandA wider domed yellow gold band

Identical

Same metal, same profile, same width. Timeless and unmistakably a pair.

A white gold pavé bandA white gold beveled men’s band

Same metal, own style

One metal ties the pair together while each band suits the person wearing it.

A rose gold knife-edge bandA brushed platinum men’s band

Complementary

Different metals or finishes chosen to sit well together, like rose gold and brushed platinum.

3D renders.

Friendly tip

Rings worn touching rub slightly against each other. How much depends on each metal’s hardness and karat: two pieces in the same metal and karat wear most evenly, while a harder metal can slowly wear a softer one. Mixing metals is a style choice many people love; just have both rings checked at the same time. Color matters too: a white gold band can look slightly different beside platinum.

Chapter 4

Men’s wedding bands: width, profile, finish and fit

For many men it’s the only ring they’ll wear every day, so comfort and proportion matter as much as style.

Curved / chevronPossible, but the curve must still meet the engagement ringDesigned for one engagement ringBuy after the engagement ring is final

Before you order: a checklist

  • The engagement ring is final, so the band can be chosen against it.
  • You’ve checked the engagement ring’s side view: how low the head sits and whether the gallery leaves room for a band.
  • The band’s metal and karat match the engagement ring, or you’ve chosen a mix deliberately.
  • Both sizes are confirmed; wider bands can need a slightly different size.
  • You know whether the band can be resized later (full eternity bands can’t).
  • Engraving text is decided and fits the band’s width.
  • You’ve ordered two to three months before the wedding.

Engraving

Most bands can be engraved inside with a date, initials, coordinates or a short phrase. Keep it short, since narrow bands have less space, and remember that resizing can change how an engraving looks. Friendly Diamonds re-engraves after a resize for $30 (up to 20 characters).

  • Ideas that fit: “Always”, initials with the date, the coordinates of where you met, or a word only the two of you understand.
  • Wide men’s bands have room for longer text or a symbol; slim and pavé bands need fewer characters.

Chapter 6

When to buy wedding bands

  1. 3 months beforeStart looking once the engagement ring is final, so the band can be matched to it.
  2. 2 months beforeOrder, leaving time for sizing, engraving and shipping.
  3. 1 month beforeTry both bands on with the engagement ring; resize or adjust if needed.
  4. Wedding weekHand the bands to someone you trust for the ceremony.

Questions

Wedding band questions, answered

Do wedding bands have to match the engagement ring?

No. Many people match the metal so the rings wear well together, then choose any band style they love. Some choose a curved band designed to sit against their engagement ring.

Will my wedding band sit flush with my engagement ring?

It depends on the ring’s setting height, gallery, center-stone shape and both bands’ profiles. Many solitaires, cathedral settings and bezels sit close to a straight band; halos, three stone and toi et moi rings often leave a small gap, which a curved, notched or open band can close or frame.

Which hand and order do you wear the rings on?

In the US and UK, both rings usually go on the left ring finger, with the wedding band closest to the hand and the engagement ring above it. Traditions vary by country and culture.

What is the difference between a half eternity and a full eternity band?

A half eternity band has diamonds across the top only, so it’s comfortable underneath and can usually be resized within a limited range. A full eternity band has diamonds all the way round and can’t be resized.

Can wedding bands be resized?

Plain bands are usually the easiest to resize; pavé and half eternity bands can usually be resized within a limited range; full eternity bands can’t be resized. Friendly Diamonds includes one complimentary resize within the first 12 months, up to two sizes up or down, with free shipping both ways within the US. Eternity designs are excluded, and customer service confirms each request.

How wide should a men’s wedding band be?

Most men choose 5–7 mm. Slimmer fingers often suit 4–5 mm and larger hands 7–8 mm. Wider bands can feel tighter, so check the size.

What is a comfort-fit band?

A band with a rounded inside edge. It slides over the knuckle more easily and feels smooth against the finger. Standard-fit bands have a flat inside and sit a little closer; it’s a matter of preference.

When should we buy wedding bands?

About two to three months before the wedding, once the engagement ring is final, to leave time for sizing and engraving.

Can we mix metals between our bands?

Yes. A couple’s bands don’t need to match. For a band worn touching the engagement ring, the same metal and karat wear most evenly; a harder metal can slowly wear a softer one, so have both rings checked together.

What should we engrave inside our wedding bands?

A date, initials, coordinates or a short phrase. Keep it brief for slim or pavé bands; wide men’s bands have room for more.
