The Origin Story—The honest one.

The Origin Story—The honest one.

Life has a funny way of pushing you exactly where you need to be…

I didn't plan Friendly Diamonds. I didn't wake up one day with a grand vision for a lab-grown diamond brand. Honestly, after leaving my job in the wealth management space, I found myself figuring out life in the midst of COVID. My family has been in the diamond business for generations, so when my brother's trademarked name, Friendly Diamonds, was sitting unused, someone suggested I build something with it. The idea of selling diamond jewelry online seemed like a good one. So I did. Not out of passion. Not out of a grand plan. Just because life presented an open door and I walked through it.

I started sketching the website on paper. Hired one tech person to build it. One designer to handle creatives and social media. I knew nothing about performance marketing, nothing about e-commerce, nothing about selling jewelry online. I was genuinely learning everything as I went.

We posted on social media. Got almost no traction. I had no idea how to get our first sale. I was stuck.

Then an opportunity landed in my lap. A large marketplace reached out. They wanted us to list our engagement rings and diamonds on their platform. The POC told me we'd go live within a week. I took it lightly. Almost too lightly.

A day later, I spoke to a friend who also sold on that marketplace. He told me he got massive sales on his very first day. That's when it hit me. And not in a good way.

I had nothing in place. No supply management. No manufacturing pipeline. No logistics. No packing materials. Not even a FedEx account. No customer service process. We hadn't sold a single piece yet. We had absolutely zero infrastructure.

I spent that night setting up everything I possibly could. And on day one, just like my friend had said, the orders came.

What followed was one of the most chaotic yet strangely exhilarating months. I was personally replying to every single customer message. Our branded packaging was on a slow boat from China, so I was packing jewelry pieces into standard off-the-rack boxes. I was standing in the FedEx queues myself, dropping off packages. I was working around the clock. It was messy. But finally, people were buying, and I was doing whatever it took to make sure they got what they paid for.

For a full year, we thrived. Sales grew month on month. I thought we'd figured it out. We hadn't.

The marketplace kept hiking its commissions. Our margins were getting eaten alive. Then one day I had a sour conversation with their POC. And just like that, overnight, we ended the alliance. Everything we'd built over that year, the volume, the momentum, the sales, evaporated.

I decided it was time to build our own website properly. Grow our own traffic. Own our own customers. But the moment I said that out loud, the doubts came flooding in from people around me. Growing your own e-commerce website is hard. It needs real investment.

I started to believe them, and I was ready to shut Friendly Diamonds down. I walked into the office to tell my small team it was over. But they didn't let me.

They said we'll make this happen together. That room of people made me believe in Friendly Diamonds for the first time.

From that point, it was slow. But it was consistently upward…

Today, I am obsessed with Friendly Diamonds in a way I never expected. Honestly, it's not the diamonds or jewelry that keep me up at night. It's the business. It's like a baby I gave birth to and have been nurturing every single day. There is genuinely not a single moment in my day when I'm not thinking about it.

I didn't start this out of passion, but it definitely turned into one. But somewhere along the way through the chaos and the near-shutdowns and the slow upward climb, it became the thing I care about most.

That's the real story of how Friendly Diamonds started. No perfect plan, just stubbornness, a trademarked name, a team that believed when I didn't, and a lot of figuring it out as we went.

I didn't choose Friendly Diamonds. Friendly Diamonds chose me.
