Pride month 2022 is here! And so are the pride month gifts. But before we get to the gifts, let’s talk about why this month is dedicated to those who fought for their right to be recognized for who they are, not be judged based on their orientation and be treated as equals. To understand more we must take a walk through history lane, to a time when the LGBTQ community wasn’t as free as they are today.
Post World War II, The United States social order was in complete disarray. The government was committed to fending off any element of change to re-establish the social order that prevailed before the war. In their goal to end communism, the government would conduct searches across the country, especially in state-run departments, to root out communist agents. Anybody considered an anarchist or communist was appropriated as a risk to national security. And as a part of this protocol, gays and lesbians were also considered a national security risk on the basis that they could be blackmailed.
It was such a challenging time for members of the LGBTQ community from 1947 to 1950 as thousands of people were denied jobs, discharged from military duty, and fired from government jobs on the suspicion of being gay. As time progressed, things didn’t get any easier. The American Psychiatry Association even termed being gay, a mental disorder. But the community stood its ground and supported each other through it all. And then, on one fateful day, June 28, 1969, the historic Stonewall riots would prove to be the dawn of a new era for the gay freedom movement.
On this fateful morning of June 28, police raided a bar known as the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, NY City where lesbian, gay, bi transgender and queer people would meet up. The police raids would happen often. But on June 28, the LGBTQ community fought back. This event came to be known as the Stonewall Uprising.
One year later, the first gay pride parade occurred in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco to mark the anniversary of the uprising. Since then, June has become synonymous with the sound of freedom, pride, and acknowledgment that every individual has the right to be who they are when it comes to their orientation. And whatever their orientation may be, they still deserve to be treated as equals.
During this month, pride celebrations occur not only in America but worldwide. And during the pride march, you will see thousands of rainbow flags, symbolizing peace and diversity within the LGBTQ community, flying high as an ode to the people who stood for what they believed in during the gay human rights campaign.
Pride month is also a time for sharing gifts within the community. And keeping the celebrations in mind, we’ve curated a range of jewelry gift ideas perfect for this year’s pride month celebrations.
